Summer Programs (2021)

Programs

Join us this summer as we offer both educational and sports and recreational programming for youth between the ages of 5 and 13.  We will be exploring art around the world through photography, printmaking, and sculpture, participating in meaningful physical activities for the development of healthy lifestyles and developing reading strategies with students who are struggling with their learning skills, work habits and language.

Sports and recreation programs will be offered in person and educational programming will be offered online through the Zoom platform. Registration is mandatory.

Soccer

A sports and recreation program promoting healthy lifestyles and skill building through meaningful physical activity.  All activities will be built around current safety guidelines.

Age of participants
5 to 9 and 10 to 13
every Tuesday or Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Cost
FREE

On the days of the program, participants must come prepared wearing appropriate clothing. Water and snacks will be provided. Guardians must come prepared to stay for the duration of the program with the participant.

 

Art

Explore art through creative self reflection using different art medium such as photography, pottery and painting. Students will learn to apply the creative process to produce a variety of two- and three-dimensional art works, using elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings.

Cost

On the days of the program, guardians must come prepared to stay for the duration of the program. Water and healthy snacks will be provided.

 

Summer Literacy

The Literacy Program provides children from grades junior kindergarten to grade 5 with the opportunity to develop reading strategies including: phonemic awareness, levelled reading, shared reading and targeted interactive writing exercises.  This program is not suited for special education student.

This program is for participants who are struggling with their learning skills, work habits and language.  For example, receiving satisfactory or needs improvement in learning skills or “C’s” or “D’s” in language on their report cards.

5 to 10 – every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm
*participant must have completed at least Junior Kindergarten

On the days of the program, participants must come prepared with the materials provided by Empowerment Squared.

 

Home Alone Safety

Working with volunteers, participants will complete the SOS 4 Kids online program over four weeks which aims to empower youth to make confident choices, handle real life and prevent dangerous situations and live a safe life. By means of games, digital media, video and situational-based scenarios, youth will gain skills to create safe environments for themselves at home, school, online and in their communities. Fun and interactive, kids must earn 7 safety badges to successfully obtain the Home Alone Safety Certificate.

This program is for youth between the ages of 10 and 13, who are mature and responsible to stay home alone for a short period of time and where a clear safety plan is created for the youth and guardians in the event of an emergency.  This course does not certify youth to babysit.

10 to 13 – Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am (one week approximately to complete certification)

On the days of the program, participants must come prepared with the materials provided by Empowerment Squared.

 

Participant Registration

All programs will be offered online through the Zoom platform and registration is mandatory for each participant.

Volunteer 

All programs will be offered online through the Zoom platform and both returning and new volunteers must complete an application.  Training will be provided prior to the start of the program (summer literacy training is over three days) and materials for the art and summer literacy programs will be provided.
