Summer Literacy

Empowerment Squared’s Summer Literacy program is built to aid participants from the age of 5 to 10 with strengthening their learning skills, working habits and increasing their language skills. We provide opportunities for children from kindergarten through third grade to develop reading strategies in phonemic awareness, levelled and shared reading, as well as targeted interactive writing exercises through games. Mentors in our program work with participants to identify literacy goals and bridge academic gaps.

Removing barriers

Many youth from newcomer, marginalized, immigrant and refugee communities are disadvantaged in developing literacy strategies due to their parents being illiterate in their native language, as well as English, and do not have the means to help their children with basic literacy skills. Through Empowerment Squared’s Summer Literacy Program, we aim to be the key intervention to help youth fill literacy gaps and remove barriers to positive community engagement.

After submitting a mandatory registration form, participants will be contacted to discuss their goals to accomplish during the program. This discussion will include reviewing the most recent school report card. Priority will be given to participants who are getting “C’s” or “D’s” in language on their report cards. On the days of the program, participants must come prepared with the materials provided by Empowerment Squared.

The next session of the Summer Literacy Program runs through the month of August 2021.
