Student Navigation Program

Empowerment Squared’s Student Navigation Program provides assistance and support to students and families who are experiencing difficulties in the education system in Hamilton. This program is focused on providing holistic and culturally appropriate support for Black, racialized and newcomer students and families. Our assistance is customized to provide the most appropriate support on a case by case basis. The Program also strives to achieve systemic change by analyzing front line trends and leveraging those findings to influence decision at a systems level. It seeks to interrupt the perpetuation of systemic inequities at the intersection of the education and child welfare systems. The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) Human Rights office, and the Hamilton Children’s Aid Society’s are key partners.

The Student Navigation Program was created in March 2021, and is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. The program was initially created to provide educational advocacy for Black students and families in the education system. Since its creation, it has expanded to support a diversity of families who are experiencing inequalities in Hamilton’s education system and child welfare systems. To date, the program has supported close to 100 families (over 300 individuals).

Empowerment Squared programs are free for all participants.
