You are cordially invited to a special facilitated conversation and networking event with global business leader Alexander Cummings. This session will focus on Mr. Cummings’ work toward The Development of Strong Governance and Partnerships for Sustainable Development and Education in Liberia, and will explore how institutional partners such as McMaster University’s Office of International Affairs and Empowerment Squared are helping drive transformation.
Members of the International community, including Canada and developmental partners, have repeatedly
argued that poor economic performance in developing countries like Liberia is due to bad governance. Thus, the call for post-conflict countries such as Liberia, to establish a good governance system is overwhelming.
As of 2005, Liberia emerged from multiple civil conflicts, but the scars and destruction are still present. Liberia has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world and there is not a single functioning library. According to UNICEF, 70% of schools were severely damaged or completely destroyed and due to the severity of the
infrastructure challenge, poor education, and lack of funding, many Liberian youth do not attend school.
