Empowering Hamilton’s Future Leaders: A Look Back at Camp UBUNTU – Summer Edition

Sep 4, 2026 | Events, News & Updates

August 2026 was a spectacular, jam-packed month! We officially wrapped up the final week of Empowerment Squared’s Camp UBUNTU – Summer Edition. Over the past four weeks, our vibrant camp community came together to welcome 40 enthusiastic campers from 6 – 13 years of age. Every single day was an whirlwind of high energy, roaring laughter, hands-on learning, and the building of lifelong friendships.

The word Ubuntu translates to “I am because we are”. This summer, our campers didn’t just learn that philosophy, they lived it out loud. Let’s take a look back at the incredible highlights, milestones, and unforgettable memories from this phenomenal season!

📚 Academic Adventures & Standing Ovations

Our Educational Programming was designed to keep young minds razor-sharp while turning up the volume on creative self-expression.

From Instructions to Imagination: Campers kicked off the summer mastering procedural writing (learning how to map out clear, step-by-step instructions). By the final weeks, they dove headfirst into creative writing; exploring narrative structures, building unforgettable characters, and crafting vivid plots.

The Ultimate Literacy Escape Room: In Week 2, students put their reading comprehension and teamwork skills to the test during a high-stakes literacy escape room challenge. Campers raced against the clock, solving clues together to successfully track down our missing camp mascot.

Trophies & Acceptance Speeches: To cap off their creative writing journey, every camper designed a custom award for themselves and wrote a formal acceptance speech. Overcoming those classic on-stage jitters, each child stepped up to the microphone to proudly deliver their speech in front of their peers and staff. Every single camper took home a shiny trophy, courtesy of Repeat Champions Foundation.

🥁 Music, Arts, & Cultural Immersion

Creativity extended way beyond the notebook as our campers explored rhythms, history, and vibrant heritage traditions.

Music, Arts, & Cultural Immersion

Talent Show: After weeks of enthusiastic preparation, the stage spotlight turned on for the big talent show. Our campers completely blew us away, taking total ownership of the stage with self-written and directed acting skits and high-energy dance routines they choreographed themselves.

Making Noise & Making Music: Campers got a specialized, hands-on introduction to music, learning the fundamentals of playing the keyboard with Fidel Sebastian and mastering traditional rhythms on the djembe drums with our Chief Empowerment Officer, Leo Johnson.

BBQ Beats with Hamilton Child and Family Supports (HCFS): Our wonderful community partner, HCFS, invited us out to their energetic “Black Child & Youth BBQ”. The Ghanaian Association of Hamilton put on a spectacular cultural presentation, and it was pure joy watching our campers leap up to join in on the dancing!

A Magical Visit from Ms. Tania Lou: We were thrilled to host the incredible Ms. Tania Lou for an immersive cultural performance. She brought Jamaican culture to life, teaching our participants through captivating folklore, traditional songs, and expressive dance.

🏀 High-Octane Gym Games & Teamwork

Energy levels were off the charts this summer! Campers hit the gym daily to build athletic skills and master the fundamentals of sports. Led by our amazing coaching team, campers leveled up their soccer and basketball dribbling skills. The gym was constantly buzzing with friendly, high-spirited games of dodgeball and kickbaseball, emphasizing sportsmanship, booming communication, and cheering on every single teammate.

💼 Inspiring Hamilton’s Future Entrepreneurs

One of the most unique and exciting pillars of this year’s camp was planting the seeds for future financial literacy and business leadership.

Needs vs. Wants: Facilitators from our Professional Skills and Entrepreneurship Department taught campers how to look at money differently, distinguishing between needs and wants while collaborating to build real-world event budgets.

The Ultimate Business Pitch: In our final week, campers launched their very own mock businesses! They identified real-world problems to solve, defined their target demographics, set pricing structures, and even designed eye-catching custom marketing flyers.

Facing the “Dragons”: Campers took to the stage to pitch their business concepts to a live panel of guest judges made up of real, local entrepreneurs, Mark John Stewart of FlyPrint and Kofo Owolabi of KOAR Travel. The creativity and professionalism in the room was absolutely inspiring!

🍕 Fueling Our Camp & Sourcing Local

A major priority this summer was making sure our campers were sustained by healthy, nutritional meals every single day. All meals were culturally suitable. We wanted our camp to feed the community in more ways than one. Over the four weeks, we proudly supported incredible local businesses and diverse entrepreneurs to cater our daily lunches and our epic final day celebration.

A massive shoutout to our local food heroes who kept us fueled and smiling:

Hamilton Hakka and Momo House

Tahini’s (Centennial Pkwy)

Jerk Dogs

Hi-Line Pizza Wings & Shawarma (On King St E)

Lakshmi Chowk BBQ & Karahi House

🏆 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Supporters & Volunteers

An initiative of this scale truly takes a village.

To our incredible volunteers: Words cannot fully express our appreciation for our dedicated volunteers who spent their time with us over the course of these four weeks. Thank you for showing up every single day to mentor, guide, and support our campers. Your presence, encouragement, and care created a safe and empowering space for these young leaders to thrive.

To Hillfield Strathallan College (HSC): A huge thank you to HSC for their fantastic support in keeping our summer moving! Your generous donation of transportation for two entire weeks of camp made a massive difference in our operational success and kept our programming accessible and seamless.

To Repeat Champions Foundation: We want to extend a special mention to the Repeat Champions Foundation for their incredibly generous donation of over 300 trophies to Empowerment Squared. We used some of the beautiful trophies to honour our campers during our final week celebration, ensuring every single child walked away with a tangible, shining symbol of their hard work, personal triumphs, and unique talents!

💕 Lifelong Memories and Friendships

As camp wrapped up, there were plenty of tight hugs and a few tears as campers realized they might not see their newly formed friends every day. But the bonds made at Camp UBUNTU run deep. Our youth left camp more confident, more connected, and fully aware of the power of community.

Thank you to all of our incredible families, brilliant coaches, guest facilitators, and dedicated staff for making this summer unforgettable.
