ACCESS Program

Prior to March 2020, Empowerment Squared primarily engaged with our community through in-person programs focused on mentorship, access to post-secondary education, information literacy, and sports and recreation. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid shutdown of most in-person programs, Empowerment Squared quickly adapted and engaged with our stakeholders to understand how the organization could continue to support families during this unprecedented time.

Through assessments, we learned that several families were experiencing partial to complete loss of income, impacting their ability to purchase basic necessities such as food, household supplies, and hygiene supplies. Another emerging need was the lack of access to technological devices for children and guardians to access and actively participate in remote learning.

The ACCESS program was launched March 2020. Since its inception, the program has supported over 1000 individuals with food, household essentials, personal protective equipment, and access to technology.

ACCESS Tech

Empowerment Squared’s ACCESS Tech program addresses the gap in access to technology that disproportionately impacts newcomer, racialized, and marginalized communities in Hamilton.

The program delivers digital literacy workshops to youth, guardians, and caregivers and provides basic computer skill education to build confidence as participants engage in the education system, seek employment, and connect with loved ones overseas.

The program also distributes technology to the community to remove barriers in accessing equitable opportunities in education and employment.
