DRIVEN: Beyond Boundaries

Our initiatives are both local and global in nature. It is important to remember that many of the issues associated with lack of opportunity, conflict, and powerlessness are seen across the world as well as in our own backyards. Sometimes, as we strive to be better global citizens, we forget about our neighbours right here.

Problem

Almost 95,650 people living in Hamilton live in households with incomes below the poverty line. 24% of those living in poverty are children.

There are faces behind these facts. These numbers put into perspective how many youth are suffering right here in our own community. Empowerment Squared believes that it is important to allow all young people to have an equal opportunity to succeed.

Project

DRIVEN: Beyond Boundaries is a collection of free, volunteer run programs set to take place afterschool, on weekends, and during summer months within the Hamilton community. The program evolved from the development of two programs – The Homework Club and Day on Campus – established by Leo Johnson, Executive Director of Empowerment Squared.

After landing in Canada, and spending six months here in Hamilton, Johnson had adapted to the environment and could already see where programs were lacking for new immigrants. Realizing the facts about poverty in Hamilton, Johnson became more and more adamant about granting aid to underprivileged youth. From here, DRIVEN began to expand.

After the launching of these programs, we have seen results with positive feedback from its participants. At the heart of the DRIVEN program is the notion that the best way to build a stronger Hamilton is to help youth, help others. All of its diversified  programs are designed to not only foster leadership and motivation in participants, but also encourage them to apply their developed skills within their own communities. Empowerment Squared continues to provide Hamilton youth with various programs in order for youth to continue driving down the road to success.
