United FC wins exhibition match

Posted in: News & Updates, United FC by Kate Weersink on July 27, 2010

Hamilton, ON—The game started a little shaky for United FC. It was the first competitive game they had played since January. But it took no more than 15 minutes for their nerves to die down, and for them to settle into the game. United FC showed their fans the kind of game they could play and handily defeated Ancaster SC 4-2 in an exhibition match aimed at helping the team get ready for England.

With Michael Pett announcing the game and a handful of volunteers helping out, the event couldn’t have run much smoother. There was hope that the game would have raised more money for the trip. However, the exhibition game still gave United FC a chance to showcase their skills for local fans as well as practice with another team of such calibre.

“The team was really glad to have been given the chance to show off their talents in front of local fans,” said Leo Johnson, Coach of United FC and Executive Director of Empowerment Squared. “Although fundraising may have fallen short, the game had huge value in terms of impacting the lives of these boys. For them to realize that they have the backing of their local community will be very helpful in the tournament.”

United FC leaves for their big trip this Thursday, July 29. While they are away at the tournament, Empowerment Squared is happy to announce that they will be in contact with the team and will be posting daily updates about how the tournament is going. The boys will write a blog while away in England and their daily posts will be available by clicking here.

“This being the first event run in support of United FC, our new adopted project, I was surprised at how well it turned out,” said Pett, Director of Outreach & Development for Empowerment Squared. “I look forward to September when our formal adoption takes place and continued support will ensue.”

Once again we thank all those that came out to support United FC and we wish them luck at the Arsenal International Youth Tournament in England!

Empowerment Squared will be providing continued support by accepting online donations for United FC as well as posting updates, photos and videos of team from the tournament. To make a donation or view photos and videos, please click here.
