Empowerment Squared offers you an opportunity to make a long-lasting, positive difference in the lives of newcomer families and marginalized youth. As a volunteer with Empowerment Squared, you are making a strong, action-oriented declaration about how much we believe in the capabilities of our youth.

You play an indispensable role at Empowerment Squared and much of our success is directly attributed to over 100 volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year. As a result of our success and growth, our need for volunteers is always on the increase as we continue to engage people from all sectors and backgrounds to support the delivery of our programs. What Qualities do I need to be a great Empowerment Squared Volunteer?
We look for people who are passionate about our vision, their role, dedicated, and commited to our program participants. A great Empowerment Squared Volunteer must: 

  • Be serious about their volunteer commitment
  • Be patient, respectful, and act within the boundaries outlined in their duties 
  • Be committed to learning, youth empowerment, integration of newcomer families  
  • Be willing to volunteer in at least one Empowerment Squared program 
  • Have energy and enthusiasm
  • Possess a desire to make a difference in someone’s life

Volunteer Opportunities

Academic Mentoring/Tutoring  

  • At least one night a week in the evenings after school hours
  • During the school year between September – June, and during the summer breaks 
  • Tutoring students at various levels in small groups or one-on-one
  • Tutoring students in one of the core subjects (Math, English, Science, Geography, Social Sciences)
  • Working with newcomer youth on trouble-shooting skills, academic upskilling, social and life skills
  • Supporting newcomer families, parents and adult allies to be more involved in the children education  

Group Sessions/Mentoring 

  • Social/Emotional support to newcomer and marginalized youth through participating in inclusive and engaging mentoring group activities
  • One night every other week in the evening after school hours during the school year
  • Work with other mentors in groups of 10 -15 youth

Others 

  • Grant Writing and Research
  • Web Master and Designer 

Minimum Requirements/Processes 
The requirements and process to become a volunteer include:

  • Attend at least one volunteer orientation session
  • Have enough time to commit for at least two hours per week on a regular basis for a minimum of one school year
  • Enjoy mentoring, teaching, explaining school subjects to youth based on level of comfort 
  • Complete the volunteer intake package
  • Pass a vulnerable sector criminal background check
  • Provide references
  • Attend any other mandatory training sessions required based on role
