Goodbye Erika, Hello Kate

Posted in: Blog by Kate Weersink on June 28, 2010

Well, here we are already. It has come time for Erika to leave us and the new Erika to take over as Communications Director for Empowerment Squared. I started last week where Erika introduced me to all our lovely interns and I got the full run down on what has been happening with the organization so far this summer (some pretty exciting stuff!). Before I introduce myself though I just want to say goodbye and many thanks to Erika Strong for all the hard work she put into Empowerment Squared this summer. I have big shoes to fill, wish me luck.

So I’m Kate. I’m a 23 year old who has recently graduated with an Honours Communication Studies and Sociology degree from McMaster University. I’m originally from a small town, actually a rural route close to Stratford (Yes, home town of Justin Bieber). I’m a farm girl at heart but am excited to be living in Hamilton for the summer to help Empowerment Squared become even bigger and better than it already is.

What else can I tell you about me? Well, I love listening to all types of music, including country (don’t judge me). I love to read, travel, and learn about new cultures. I like to run, mainly as a social event, I’m not very hardcore and, fun fact: this is my first blog post ever. I’m not the most technologically savvy person out there but I’ve already learned lots about social media in the past 3 days so I’m hoping this improves.

Because of where I grew up I have had some pretty interesting jobs in the past which to name a few have included a thigh de-boner at a chicken processing plant, milking cows on a dairy operation and walking through fields researching corn plants. Although I know you learn lots at every job, and although I know it’s pretty impressive that I can say I’ve almost had a job that relates to every food group in Canada’s food guide, I am VERY excited to be at Empowerment Squared this summer where my steel toed boots can stay in my closet for the time being.

P.S. How do you like my pic? Erika and I look so much alike right?
