Dance So Good

Posted in: Blog by Michael Pett on May 19, 2010

Hi, my name is Michael Pett and I’m the Director of Outreach & Development here at Empowerment Squared. Basically, I’m in charge of helping advance the organization by overseeing a number of different areas, which include fundraising, membership, chapters, human resources and marketing. Although I’ve been around since the very beginning, this is a brand new role for me with the organization and I couldn’t be more stoked for the challenge!I’m going to try my best to write a blog post each week to give you a glimpse into the organization through my eyes and to also help you get to know the person behind the position. All of my posts will feature a Thumbs Up & Thumbs Down section like the one you see below. Hopefully it’ll be an entertaining way for you to find out the highlights and downfalls of my week. Don’t hesitate to comment and share yours!

Okay, now I guess I should probably include a little bit about me.

I’m a recent graduate from McMaster University and am proud to be able to call Hamilton my home after growing up overseas in Russia, Ukraine and Germany. I’m an athlete and an artist. Basketball is my sport of choice, but I play pretty much anything. Theatre is my art of choice, but I appreciate pretty much everything. I’m also really interested in social media and enjoy music. However, I’m not a snob like Erika. Haha! Anyway, there’s a lot more about me that I could share, but I guess you’ll just have to read my blog posts to find out more.

So check back often and please feel free to leave me a comment! I’m always interested in hearing about upcoming events, music recommendations, social media tips, general advice, etc.

Thumbs Up

Wakey!Wakey! Great new band I just discovered the other day. They’ve got a nice raw sound to them. Definitely check them out if you haven’t! I especially recommend you listen to the song “Dance So Good” by them.

Motown Wednesdays at Club Absinthe. I am also a big fan and try to go every week. I’d probably consider myself a regular. If you haven’t been, you’re now officially invited!

James North Art Crawl I went this past Friday for the first time and absolutely loved it! It’s awesome seeing the street packed with people who appreciate the arts, and the weather was amazing. Such a great overall vibe. I’ll see you all again on the second Friday night of June!

NBA Playoffs I am a huge basketball fan. So the playoffs are obviously one of my favourite times of the year. Right up there with March Madness. The only downside is that I don’t tend to get anything productive accomplished in the evenings because I’m glued to the TV screen. But whatever. Go Suns!

40 Applicants. 7 Internships. So if you haven’t noticed, we’re currently in the process of hiring summer interns. We’ve got 7 positions and have already received over 40 applications. Either no one can find jobs or we’re offering a valuable experience. I’d like to think it’s the latter!

Thumbs Down

One Tree Hill Season Finale Okay, yes. I watch One Tree Hill. It’s one of my many guilty pleasures. And don’t worry, Erika already tells me how lame I am every single day. Regardless, the point is…Seriously, that’s how your season finale? You randomly kill off two main characters in the last 15 seconds of the episode?! Last season it was driving off into a sunset and now it’s this.

Astrology Yeah, I might be lame for watching One Tree Hill. But honestly, who’s into astrology? I mean, seriously though. Believing that the position of “celestial bodies” can provide information about personality? That sounds pretty lame. I’m just saying.

Tendinitis So I recently started running again after an 8-month hiatus, and I decided to kick-off my training with an 8.5 km run. Well, let’s just say that probably wasn’t one of my better ideas. The run went fine. But…my knees weren’t too impressed the next day and have been inflamed ever since.

Erika’s Carpal Tunnel One thing you should know about Erika is that she likes to whine…a lot. This week’s topic of choice is her apparent carpal tunnel. I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if she called in sick tomorrow because of it. Haha.

40 Applicants. 7 Internships. Okay, so I love the fact that we’ve received so many applications. But since I’m responsible for human resources, it also means that I’m the one who gets stuck reading all of them. And it’s not that I’m lazy. Not at all. It’s just that, well, to be frank…some people have terrible applications. Don’t get me wrong, most of them are absolutely phenomenal! But there are a select few that leave me wishing that I had those 5 minutes of my life back. Like seriously people, I don’t care that you played softball in Grade 6. But I do care that your spelling and grammar make you sound like you’re in middle school!

    1. Astrology makes sense. It explains why you’re so two faced (Gemini).
    2. I have carpal tunnel. Unclear how complaining about that is different from complaining about tendinitis.

Motown nights @ Absinthe = best nights of my life

Since I’ve been away all school year, I have not been able to catch up on my dancing and singing to the tunes of Marvin and Mr. James Brown. A visit is long overdue!

Perhaps an empowerment squared trip to motown is necessary?

Agreed! I think we should make it a mandatory part of orientation for new interns. Thoughts?

In regards to the OTH season finale, I’m sure they won’t end up dying. One MIGHT, but I doubt it. My guess is that Clay will be fine but it’ll be a struggle to keep Quinn alive. We’ve seen this pattern of tragedy in Tree Hill before..

I like the sounds of that!

Yeah, I don’t actually think they’re dead either. However, I still think it was a stupid way to end the season. I feel like they couldn’t think of a more intelligent way to add some suspense for the beginning of the next season, so the writing staff did what they always do and almost had someone die. Lame.

And good, I’m glad you’re on board with the idea Sam! We’ll have to talk to the others.
