Busk a Move raises close to $2,000

Goodbye Erika, Hello Kate

Well, here we are already. It has come time for Erika to leave us and the new Erika to take over as Communications Director for Empowerment Squared. I started last week where Erika introduced me to all our lovely interns and I got the full run down on what has been happening with the organization so far this summer (some pretty exciting stuff!). Before I introduce myself though I just want to say goodbye and many thanks to Erika Strong for all the hard work she put into Empowerment Squared this summer. I have big shoes to fill, wish me luck. A library is an educational support system that is accessible to both the rich and the poor in Canada, but we often take it for granted. You say fundraising, I say flirting

Intern Highlight Profile: Rachael Sloat

Hamilton, ON—As our new Multimedia Assistant, Rachael’s responsibilities include designing promotional material, taking photos for the website, and assisting with brand control. She was born in Ottawa, and grew up in the small town of Cayuga. She is a recent Combined Honours Multimedia and Classics graduate from McMaster University. Next September, she will continue her studies at McMaster as a Master’s student in the newly created Communications and New Media program.

Refugee reforms miss the mark

Hamilton, ON—The  2nd Annual Symposium on HIV, Law and Human Rights opened our eyes to many issues we had not thought about before. The focus of the conference was on HIV, but this virus is multi-dimensional and influences many different people. One of the topics that came up was a discussion of Bill C-11,  legislation to reform Canada’s refugee system. The government has decided that the entire process needs to be streamlined and overhauled. Read more…
